Sudden onset blindness associated with a pituitary fossa mass in a dog

Gwendolyn Lynch and others, Eye Care for Animals, Tustin, California

A 10-year-old neutered male mixed breed dog was presented for the evaluation of sudden onset blindness of one week's duration.

Ophthalmic examination and electroretinography showed no evidence of retinal or intraocular optic nerve diseases.

Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a sharply marginated mass originating from the area of the pituitary fossa, with imaging characteristics most typical of a pituitary macroadenoma.

The owners were offered radiation therapy but this was declined because of the guarded prognosis.
