Before you ask, I'm not the singer. My real name is Alexander; Arlo is a nickname that stuck. That's something I'm quite glad about, since it occasionally gets me a good restaurant table (more reliably, I guess, than if I'd been nicknamed Elvis).
My career: jackaroo, frozen cake factory line worker, stockbroker, financial advisor (aka life assurance salesman), estate agent, commercial pilot, in that order. Then, whilst searching for a job as a pilot (rare as hen's teeth at the time), I fell into veterinary public relations / marketing and never looked back.
Worked mainly as a consultant to Novartis Animal Health for about 15 years. In 2000, Novartis commissioned me to build www.vetnurse.co.uk, an online community for veterinary nurses.
In 2008, Novartis sold vetnurse.co.uk to my company and we went on to develop and launch VetSurgeon.org.
The success of these two communities, and the way in which they facilitate the sharing of knowledge, ideas and experience within the profession, is by far and away the career achievement I'm most proud of.
With hindsight, online veterinary publishing also proved to be quite a serendipitous career choice, because one of my children has Dravet's Syndrome, which means I'm needed at home a lot.
At the weekend, I'm now a slightly-overweight, balding, middle-aged YouTuber: www.youtube.com/arloguthriegadgetman
