Subcutaneous abscess caused by Clostridium perfringens and osteomyelitis in a dog

I. Cattin and others, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna

Despite aggressive antibiotic therapy, the infection led to osteomyelitis and premature closure of the tibial growth plates but further treatment resulted in a good outcome, allowing normal weight bearing on the affected limb.

A five-month-old male golden retriever presented with a history of lethargy and acute lameness in the right hindlimb. A soft tissue swelling extended from the stifle joint to the proximal third of the tibia. Clinical examination, radiological findings and cytological analysis identified an abscess caused by C. perfringens.
