Cefovecin is a third generation, extended spectrum cephalosporin developed for the treatment of bacterial infections in dogs and cats. The authors describe studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of the product in the treatment of naturally occurring secondary superficial pyoderma, abscesses and infected wounds in dogs. In 235 animals, a single 8mg/kg subcutaneous injection of cefovecin, repeated at 14-day intervals, was safe and as effective against these conditions as twice daily oral dosing with cefadroxil.
