An elderly neutered male mongrel developed a mass in the left hemimandible around the first molar tooth. The owner reported that the dog pawed at its mouth, suggesting that the mass was painful. This had been diagnosed as an osteosarcoma but histological examination identified it as an ossifying fibroma.
A hemimandibulectomy was performed and there was no evidence of extension or metastasis on computed tomography of the skull or on thoracic or abdominal radiography. The dog was healthy six months after its initial presentation.
