Independent Graduate Internship (Small animals)– Near Falkirk

Job Description

(Closing date 21/04/2025)

Independent Graduate 13 month position (Small animals)– Denny by Falkirk

A bit of History: Doug and I became firm friends whilst studying at the Dick Vet and decided to set up Apex Vets from the ground up in 2010.  We did this because we wanted a really great place to work to take us through to retirement, and we wanted to be able to treat and diagnose patients to the absolute best of our ability.  We started with 1 in 2 on call, one RVN (the “Head Nurse”!) and two receptionists.  The practice has organically grown since, and we now have a team of 36, having recently introduced 6 new ACAs to fill our new nightshift role and started a new graduate internship in 2022.

We are determinedly independent practice, we focus on keeping our team happy, and we highly value everyone’s work life balance.  We all enjoy our jobs and getting home on time after a days work.   We give vets ample time for workups between consults, capping our blocks of 15 minute appointments at 2 hours.  We continue to invest in high spec equipment to push our diagnostic capabilities forward.

We enjoy whole practice (and usually partners) team building events.  In the last year we have been to see The Panto “Snow White” with hospitality.

Each year since we opened we have run a very successful community fun day and open day.  We usually get over 1000 people attending and always raise in excess of £1000 for charities hand picked by the team.  The open day after party is renowned among the team and all the family and friends who help us on the day are welcomed for some food, the bar, and Doug being the DJ for the night.

Our role:

Now the team has grown, we are looking to both give more back to the profession and hopefully mentor our associate vets of the future.  You would be recognised as an individual and part of our independent practice.  Mentoring and and CPD courses would be tailored around you.

We are looking for a Graduate vet to work a four day weeks.  The role starts after graduation in 2024 and lasting for 13 months.  In the initial months you would be on a flexible second on call to assist/shadow our on call (We would give you the option of participating the interesting cases (C-Sections/GDV’s etc)  We would also want you to cement your social life outside vet school during these months!   When you are ready you would enter the 1:4 OOH rota with dedicated backup from an experienced vet (We can also facilitate greater than 1:6 if you have appetite and energy for greater exposure to emergency cases).

We would not tie you in to the role financially.  NO tie in clauses.

The practice is in a Central Scotland location with Ochils nearby, yet with easy access to Edinburgh and Glasgow.  We have extremely low staff turnover and this post is reflective of our current waiting list of clients and desire to expand our vet team.

Work/life balance is a priority. We really do like to get home on time and see our families and go to our clubs.

We have a very strong and experienced supportive vet and nurse team who are always available for case discussions and backup, with weekly vet meetings for case discussions.  We have two VetGDP Vets.  Samuel (Primary Mentor) and Myself, Glenn.  We would hold very regular mentoring meeting with you throughout the year.  You would however be supported by the whole team.  We would ask you to complete your Vet GDP within 12 months.  This is entirely feasible with the number of patients we see.  We would welcome you speaking with our previous Graduate Vets and have a look at our google reviews.

We are proud to still provide an in house 24/7 emergency out of hours service for our clients.  Calls are sensible at around 1 per day.  You will need to be within 20 minutes of the practice when on call.  Accommodation is not provided.

Benefits include:

  • 7 weeks holiday (including one week over the festive season)
  • Salary £34k.
  • Healthcare insurance
  • Pension
  • £60 bonus for each 1st on call out of hours consultation.
  • Generous CPD
  • RCVS fees and any society of your choosing
  • VDS cover
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Team building days
  • bi-annual development reviews
  • weekly vet team meetings
  • monthly full practice meetings
  • Social Events

The successful applicant will become part of a longstanding supportive and communicative team.  With regular team meetings and a forward-thinking attitude, this should be a good place to work for many years to come.

Please apply to G.Hodgson@apexvets.com, including a CV and personal statement.  Or have a look at our practice tour on youtube here: https://youtu.be/XAbsS2QIx1Y

Applications will be reviewed and replied to Late April.
