Good question about the mask. The evidence base for mask use at all is very slim. However I believe it is a PSS requirement. As a spectacles wearer, this is my compromise. Theories to justify mask use are to stop the surgeon inhaling infected material, not a frequent concern in small animal UK practice, and to stop the surgeon spitting on the operative site.
