Congenital PSS in Birman Cats - DNA Project

We are currently looking at the predisposition of Birman cats to congenital portosystemic shunts.  The project is being run by myself and Professor Tim Gruffydd-Jones at the Feline Centre Bristol in conjunction with Professor Leslie Lyons ( UC Davis). At this stage we are looking to obtain DNA samples from affected Birman cats and their siblings.  We simply require a buccal swab and if possible details of the cat’s pedigree.

I can supply a submission form via e mail Angie.Hibbert@bristol.ac.uk ). The form is designed for owners but  also details collection of the sample.

Specific information given about the cats, including the pedigrees, will remain confidential.  I would be happy to discuss the project further with any owners, veterinarians or breeders if more information is required.  We would be most grateful to know if you are aware of any affected cats with owners that would be approachable to discuss collection of samples.  Details have been posted by the Birman Cat club http://www.birmancatclub.co.uk/DNA.htm for owners and breeders.

Thank you in advance for your assistance with this work.
